Topic: History of Arizona Housing Cooperatives

I did a bit of research into HUD-financed coops and there are many types in Arizona. When I filtered the list down to just those coops were started by the same group of people in the 1960s that look similar to Concord Village (one and two story buildings, cement block & wood, large projects, pools, clubhouses, etc), I found nearly 2500 HUD-developed cooperative condos in several major developments, as follows:
Concord Village, Tempe, 373 units
Scottsdale East Homes, Scottsdale, 283 units
Consolidated Cooperatives, Scottsdale, 350 units
Aberdeen, Scottsdale, ? units
Bethany Crest 1-5 East, Phoenix, 292 units
Bethany Crest 6 West, Phoenix, 99 units
Phoenix Towers Coop Apartments, 1950s Phoenix, ? units
Echo Ridge 1-2, Tucson, 175 units
Citation Gardens 1-11, Tucson, 516 units
Oxford Homes, Tucson, 222 units
Concord Village was created in six phases over a few years with separate HUD loans, and so were most of these other co0ops, and most of them originally had separate boards for each phase. Some, like one of our sister coops down the road, Consolidated Coops, combined into one corporation. Others, like Bethany Crest, Echo Ridge, and Citation Gardens, retain their original structures with a separate board and finances for each subdivision (although many share property manager firms, so there is a lot of consistency).
If you visit these coops, you will see "for sale by owner" signs in windows. Speaking to their boards over the years, I have learned that most coops in Arizona are sold as private party transactions. However, there are about a half dozen real estate firms that specialize in selling coops in Arizona, and they have sold thousands over the years. One pair of realtors in Scottsdale have sold more than 300 in Phoenix and Scottsdale alone.
I drew boundaries around some of these coops, and below are short urls for zillow lists of some of the recently sold transactions via MLS listings (again, the minority of all sales, but a good gauge of the market). You can see the units currently for sale on MLS within each development by changing SOLD to FOR SALE at the top.
